The First Noel Lyrics

The First Noel is a traditional English Christmas carol, most likely from the early 18th or 17th century. Unfortunately, we do not have access to its original author or composer, but it was probably written in Cornwall, England. The song tells the story of the Nativity and how an angel announced Jesus’ birth to shepherds in the fields while Wise Men traveled to Bethlehem.

“Noel” is derived from the French word meaning Christmas and represents the joyous celebration of Christ’s birth. Though simplistic in nature, this hymn has never lost popularity during Christmastime since it focuses on Christ rather than worldly distractions. It was first published in Carols Ancient and Modern by William Sandys (1823), and now countless artists cover this song on their holiday albums.

And by the light of that same star

Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord;
That hath made heaven and earth of naught,
And with his blood mankind hath bought
