He Honore Lyrics

He Hōnore is a Māori waiata (song) that fuses biblical and indigenous spiritualities. Its lyrics, taken from the Gospel of Luke, come from an old Ringatū karakia (prayer). In 1992, Ranui Ngarimu re-adapted this karakia into a song after her son Taina Piripi Ngarimu had originally composed its melody. They first shared it with a larger group of people at their family home in Aotearoa New Zealand’s South Island; now it is a beloved hymn across many Māori communities.
